Eating GF in Alaska

One of the most popular questions I get is: "Where do I eat gluten-free while visiting Alaska?" Thanks to the help of my Facebook readers, I've compiled this list of restaurants/cafes organized by city. If you have other restaurants/cafes to recommend that provide gluten-free options in Alaska (that aren't already listed), please leave me a comment below including the city, name, and any other comments you think are helpful.

Please note, this is a very loose list based on information I've received from others. The restaurants/businesses listed below may offer "gluten-free & other allergen-free" items that are NOT made in a dedicated gluten-free/allergen free facility. You are solely responsible for verifying the items ordered/purchased are suitable for your food allergies. I cannot guarantee them for you and will not be held liable.

Thanks!
Megan

I have had issues with a few places in Anchorage. Firetap does not have a designated fryer, nor does Spenard Roadhouse. (Last time I went to either) Here are a few others to try: Orso, Eva's Cupcakery, Yak and Yeti
I have heard GREAT things about Kinley's. Haven't made it there yet. There is a Pho place on Boniface, Pho Lena that can accomodate, and also Shine's in Eagle River.

When you go to Carl's Jr. Ask for no condiments if you have Celiac disease. We kept getting sick even though we watched them make it with gloves and in the container instead of counter. We missed that they take the same spatula that they use to swipe buns with condiments (bread crumbs) to swipe your lettuce wrap. Always just put condiments on after you get your burger.

@Samantha, Be careful because they use mixes for their butter and sour cream that are made with flour. May not be a problem if you are intolerant, but definitely if you are Celiac.

The Pie Stop in Anchorage can make pies with a GF crust on request. PhoNatik on Dimond has lots of gf options (also very allergy friendly) and understand the connection between soy sauce and gluten. Terra Bella cafe, anchorage, makes gf baked goods including delicious bread, muffins, scones, oatmeal bars, etc. Note on the roadhouse (anch), they label gf on the menu and sometimes have gf pizza crust/bread on request (several staff are gf). Great list, thanks!!

Here's a gem: http://www.alaskaveganandglutenfree.com/#!/home You can buy yummy gluten free bread and dough to take and bake for later. You can only get it on Wednesdays at the indoor farmer's market at the Sears Mall. It's not a sit down restaurant; the owner sells plant-based meals in a jar to take home to the family. I only recently discovered it, though I guess she's been open for business for a year now. The gluten free bread actually tastes good!! And the food is good too--all gluten free, whole foods, plant based (vegan). The menu is in her website.

ORSO and glacier brew house are the only one that I can confirm use different prep areas and utensil to avoid cross contamination.
I am sure there are others but those I'm positive.

I get sick easily and so do two of my kids. Bear Mountain Grill in Eagle River does a great job accommodating GF! The GF baked goods you find at coffee shops all over south central are made by one of their employees. Also safe is Piccolinos. Not as many options, but they are careful.

At South I am also impressed that the manager will visit your table if the server gets some clues that you are GF or allergy-sensitive, and supposedly they have a good protocol in the kitchen for using a safe and clean prep space. The manager takes complaints in that department seriously as well. Always good to check each time though.

Please be careful in Soldotna of cross contamination.
Pizza boys is a wonderful restaurant run by a great family, but they just don't have the space for a dedicated area. I miss their pizza.
I hear Odie's deli is great, but a friend who worked there warned me away due to cross contamination. I was also severely warned away from caribou by someone who has been in their kitchen and doesn't want to see me get sick.
PJ's in the old Sal's building is the safest place in town for someone with celiac. They even have a dedicated fryer. Sadly their quality is lacking.
My advice would be to pack a lunch to enjoy on your way through to the Little Mermaid in Homer. They have excellent GF pizza among other things. The staff was knowledgable and attentive. My server returned to the table to clarify something the chef told her would be unsafe. They saved me a miserable week because they knew what they were doing!

Hopefully one day you'll check out Flying Squirrel Bakery Cafe in Talkeetna. We always have gluten free options (though not recommended for anyone with a serious allergy as there is wheat in the air!). Quiche is gluten free, usually a soup or two, many baked goods such as brownies, coconut meringue cookies and many more, plus gluten free pizza crust available on wood fire pizza nights on the weekend. Thanks!

I just found your blog. I agree that Little Mermaid in Homer is fabulous for GF. My husband and daughter both have Celiac and neither one has ever gotten sick from eating there. I also recommend Fresh Catch Cafe on the Spit. The owner/chef used to be the personal chef for someone with Celiac and has always been willing to make substitutions for us. Vida's Thai Food is also another great restaurant in Homer for people who need GF options. Sourdough Express used to make their own GF bread and are pretty knowledgeable too. We haven't been there yet this season so I don't know if they are still making it. Thanks for making this list!

Our family is traveling to Alaska this summer, and the information you've provided here makes me feel much more comfortable about finding safe food for myself in Anchorage restaurants. I've booked a hotel room with a full kitchen, though, to be extra well prepared to feed myself and my family.

My autoimmune disease developed about 18 months ago, and an elimination diet last fall showed me that I could radically improve my daily functioning (and reduce by more than half my medications) by avoiding Gluten, Citrus, Potato and most Dairy.

I also avoid soy and refined vegetable oils, but never did a reintroduction challenge for those ingredients as I don't consider them real food options for daily eating.

Thanks for the work you do here.

Megan, I love that you have this restaurant listing. It's so important to have this resource when traveling or even in your own town. Here's some updates on your Fairbanks list.

Domino's GF pizza is made on the same equipment as all their other pizzas. Beware.
    Grizzlies no longer exists.
Take 5 cafe is now called Little Owl Cafe. They have vegan baked goods as well as GF.
The Lunch Cafe no longer exists.
Ivory Jacks has a dedicated kitchen area for GF! The owner is a celiac!
Blue Roof Bistro is delicious and has many GF entrees, as well as GF bread options for all of their sandwiches and GF desserts. Their food is insanely good.
    Lavelle's bistro is very accommodating.
The Banks has GF pizza made in a separate area and offers GF buns on burgers.

On a recent trip to the Valley, I ate at Turkey Red! Incredible service and food! The server was extremely knowledgeable about GF. We also ate at Bistro Red Beet and it was liberating knowing that we didn't have to ask if something was GF. LOL. Their Beet bread and buns are soooo good. Also, they have weekly specials and are very comforting types of meals.

I'll let you know if I think of more!
So glad I discovered your website and fb page.
